With the PlayStation dawned an era where video games became more cinematic. Thanks to the huge memory of compact discs and new advances in graphics computing, the old
ways of creating games changed: budgets increased, cinematic videos were added and 2D games retreated to the handhelds. Music also changed, since now, with hundreds
of megabytes, composers didn't need to watch how long their works were or how many notes were playing at once. Suddenly, they had CD quality sound available, which
allowed them to create compositions very different to those made during the previous generations. The release of games with epic soundtracks allowed video game
music to gain mainstream recognition and respect. However, it had to pay a price: most of its original characteristics disappeared. Harmonies became complex. The
pieces increased in length. The tempo slowed down. Sometimes the music wouldn't have a melody, so it couldn't be sung. Cinematic games demanded cinematic music, and by
the end of this era there were almost no differences between the music made for games and the one composed for films.
