The Nintendo DS wasn't only revolutionary with its two screens and its touch screen; it also featured stereo speakers and the large memory of its game cards
allowed games to have a better sound quality. CD-quality sound was possible for the first time on a handheld game system. However, this option wasn't used that much.
Most games kept their simple MIDI-like tunes that had been used for so long in the industry. Composers created new works for the new DS games, some of
great musical quality, although somehow they don't feel like those in the past. Many pieces tend to sound bland and in several of the best selling games and
expanded audience games it looks like music is designed to not interfere with the experience. The excessive use of remixes in sequels and the arrival
of a new generation of composers as the ones from the chiptune age start retiring might be part of the reason for this. Still, sound in video games evolves thanks
to the novel gameplay possibilities that the new hardware brings to the table: experiments are made with the microphone and the stereo speakers and new games appear
where rhythm is the main protagonist!
